A wound that will not heal can affect far more than your skin. It can disrupt sleep, work, mobility, and the confidence to make plans. An ostomy can bring practical questions and deeply personal ones. When recovery after surgery does not go as expected, patients need clear answers and a clinician who takes their concerns seriously.
Dr. Amaka Akinade founded Prodigy Wound & Specialty Care Consulting to make expert care easier to access and easier to understand. As a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner and advanced practice wound and ostomy specialist, she pairs careful clinical assessment with practical education, collaboration, and respect for each person’s goals.

A Career Dedicated to Wound and Ostomy Care
Dr. Akinade has more than 15 years of focused experience in wound and ostomy care. Her path into the specialty began in 2009, after working in neuro-oncology nursing. An opportunity to work alongside a colorectal surgeon in Seattle introduced her to the work of a wound, ostomy, and continence clinical nurse specialist. She saw how specialized care could improve comfort, independence, and quality of life, and made it the focus of her career.
Since then, she has cared for patients with complex wounds and ostomy needs while serving as a resource to nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, and caregivers. Her work includes direct care, clinical education, virtual consultation, quality improvement, and development of nurse-led services. These experiences shaped Prodigy: a practice built around specialized attention to each person’s health, circumstances, and goals.
Clinical Expertise and Specialties
Dr. Akinade evaluates the factors that can affect healing, including circulation, pressure, swelling, moisture, nutrition, mobility, chronic illness, and a patient’s ability to follow a care plan at home. Her clinical focus includes:
- Chronic and hard-to-heal wounds; diabetic foot ulcers
- Venous leg ulcers, chronic venous insufficiency, and vascular-related wounds
- Pressure injuries and post-surgical wounds, delayed healing, and dehiscence
- Ostomy education before and after surgery
- Ostomy leakage, pouching challenges, peristomal skin problems, and complex stoma needs
- Coordination with surgeons, primary care clinicians, specialists, and home health teams
Whether supporting a person with a chronic wound, helping someone adjust to an ostomy, or advising a healthcare team, Dr. Akinade starts by understanding the problem in context. She explains her recommendations clearly and works with patients and professional partners to develop practical plans that support safe, coordinated care.

Dr. Akinade shares her expertise beyond the clinic through podcasts, professional presentations, and educational programs. She has shared ostomy guidance through Coloplast Professional’s Bowel and Bladder Matters podcast, presented her doctoral work at WOCNext 2026, appeared on the CyberClinic Podcast, and is a speaker at the Northeast Chapter of the WOCN Conference in November 2026. Research Focused on Faster Access to Care
Dr. Akinade’s 2025 doctoral project evaluated a nurse-led service for patients with venous leg ulcers using standardized assessment and evidence-based guidance. In that defined quality improvement project, 82% met the project healing endpoint at 12 weeks, compared with 50% in the pre-intervention group. Reported mean healing time was 47.85 days versus 104.19 days, while mean time to access wound care was 7.68 days versus 19.31 days.

These figures describe a prior project population, not predicted results for Prodigy patients. The project defined its healing endpoint as a wound smaller than 1 cm² or 100% new skin tissue. Read the project.
Clinical Leadership and Healthcare Innovation
Before founding Prodigy, Dr. Akinade practiced within a large Houston-area multispecialty healthcare organization, where she served as a wound and ostomy clinical leader and resource. Her work extended beyond individual appointments to nurse-supported services, virtual consultation, provider education, clinical collaboration, and standardized approaches to treatment. She helped develop strategies designed to improve overall patient outcomes, access to care, and clinical standards across the healthcare system.
That experience showed her how difficult recovery can become when care is fragmented. A patient may have a surgeon, primary care clinician, vascular specialist, home health nurse, caregiver, and wound specialist involved at the same time. Dr. Akinade built Prodigy around clear communication and treatment plans patients and their care teams can understand and use.
Why She Founded Prodigy
Dr. Akinade has met patients who could not travel easily to repeated appointments, people discharged with a new ostomy who still had unanswered questions, and surgical patients who needed focused help when a wound was not healing as expected. She has also worked with clinicians and organizations that needed ready access to wound and ostomy expertise. Prodigy brings that expertise into several settings so care can fit the clinical need and the person receiving it.

Care That Respects the Person Behind the Diagnosis
Wound and ostomy care can involve pain, changes in appearance, uncertainty, and concerns patients find difficult to raise. Dr. Akinade makes room for those conversations. She explains findings in plain language, involves patients and caregivers in decisions, and considers what a treatment plan will require in daily life. Her goal is to help each person understand their options, receive appropriate specialty care, and move forward with dignity and confidence.
